Da un super cavallo da corsa a un successo di John Lennon

Guardate il video qui sotto, è della famosissima canzone Happy Xmas (war is over) di John Lennon (composto e registrato con la moglie Yoko Ono nel 1971). 

Adesso ascoltate questa: 

Avrete sicuramente notato che la melodia è praticamente la stessa! John Lennon e Yoko Ono, infatti, si sono ispirati proprio a questo vecchio brano folk che non parla del Natale o degli orrori della guerra, ma tratta un tema certamente più leggero: parla infatti di un cavallo da corsa che beve sempre troppo vino. Il cavallo in questione si chiamava Skewball (questo è il titolo della ballata) ed era un cavallo da corsa inglese del 1700 che, dopo aver vinto molte corse in Inghilterra, fu mandato in Irlanda.
Il brano si ispira a una delle sue vittorie più famose avvenuta nella contea di Kildare, nella provincia del Leinster, in Irlanda appunto, rimasta leggendaria perché Skewball all'età di undici anni (che per un cavallo da corsa è veramente tantissimo) riuscì a fare un grandissimo recupero e a battere la favorita, una cavalla grigia di nome Griselda.
La ballata è diventata poi molto famosa anche oltreoceano, ce ne sono infatti diverse versioni.
